Dr. Karen Lechter is a Scientific Review Officer in the Risk, Prevention and Health Behavior Integrated Review Group, where she handles fellowship study sections and special emphasis panels, including reviews of applications in the area of health literacy. Dr. Lechter received a J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Maryland, where her research involved the areas of motivation and decision making. Before coming to NIH, Dr. Lechter worked at the Food and Drug Administration, where she was the agency’s expert in research on patient and physician comprehension of drug information. In that capacity, she conducted research in risk communication, evaluated social science research conducted by the pharmaceutical industry, and advised agency staff and advisory committees on social science issues, health literacy and health communication.
