Dr. Rolf Menzel administers a study section reviewing R03, R15 and R21 applications in the field of bacterial pathogenesis. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley studying bacterial genetics and gene regulation. Subsequently, he studied relationships between DNA topology and gene expression as a staff fellow at the NIH. These studies were continued at research labs in the Du Pont Experimental Station. He changed directions at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he applied his skills in genetics to the design of drug discovery screens based on heterologous expression with a phenotype. He left Bristol-Meyers to co-found Small Molecular Therapeutics, a venture-backed drug discovery start-up. Upon the sale of Small Molecule, he went to Delaware to found Optigenix, a start-up in the field of directed evolution employing homologous recombination-based processes. Dr. Menzel joined CSR after Optigenix was sold to another company.
